Exotica Oils // Sample Sets
The Silk Oil collection contains 6 carefully crafted botanical perfumes blended from local and exotic ingredients.
Humans have a long history of desire for new, foreign, exciting things to fuse with their own traditions, the Silk Road being a prime example. Through this massive trade route humans exchanged ideas, knowledge, religion, technology, connection and of course spices and scents. It played a huge role in the rise of globalization. Like most things, there were downsides too.
We are now living in a time were globalization has taken another huge jump with it’s own advantages and disadvantages. For years I often found myself focused on the downside of human expansion more often than the good. I went off grid, got involved in homesteading and primitive skills. I’ve tried to create an apothecary with focuses on seed-to-bottle, hand crafted and local sourcing.
But the thing is, exotic items are kinda intriguing, sexy, and fun. Personally I love travel, trade, exchanging philosophies and discovering new botanical charms. Over time I’ve come to realize the positives technology and culture exchange has provided; I hope using it wisely can get us all to a better place and restore balance on the planet. Seems we really need it.
I took on this project to understand globalization in my own way, my part in it, and how I can navigate foreign exchanges while trying to keep the effects on the positive side. I’ve made trades with friends from around the world; kindred distillers, herbalist, growers, chefs. I’ve picked up items in my own travels over the past decade and sourced some with hours of scrutiny. My focus was on trying to keep sourcing outside my community as sustainable as possible with meaningful and fair exchanges.
So after years of play, here are 6 oil perfumes I’ve landed on.
They each come as 4 dram dropper vials unless other wise noted. The infusion and base oils are organic sunflower, avocado and chemical-free USA jojoba oil. Some of the scents were collected using shea butter and organic can ethanol (alcohol.)
Keep in mind; these oils are 100% botanical. Our skin will metabolize some of the phytochemicals and many of the volatile oils will dissipate naturally. The notes will realize themselves as well as disappear over the course of a few hours. For longer lasting scent I recommend placing in your hair or on a scarf, maybe a perfume necklace. My favorite way of using botanical oils is for anointing rituals. For example, I use the same scent during meditation. I’ve program my body to react to this scent with deep relaxation, so when I find myself in a situation where I need calming, I can pull out a small vial of the scent and place a little on my wrist, neck and temple. Scent is powerful; it connects with us immediately and can change our mood on the spot.
